The gap between “AI wrote this” and “this is actually good” isn’t the prompt — it’s the editing pass most people skip. A first draft from any AI tool tends to read fine and say very little: correct grammar, safe opinions, and a structure that could belong to a thousand other posts. Editing is what turns that draft into something with your voice and a point of view.
Why AI drafts read “fine” but flat
AI is trained to produce the statistically likely next sentence, which is great for grammar and structure and terrible for standing out. Left unedited, AI drafts tend to hedge instead of commit, list options instead of recommending one, and repeat the same transition phrases. None of that is wrong — it’s just forgettable.
The four-pass editing method
- Cut the hedging. Find every “it depends,” “in many cases,” and “some might argue,” and replace it with your actual opinion.
- Add one specific detail per section. A number, a real example, or a personal observation does more for credibility than another paragraph of explanation.
- Delete the filler intro and outro. AI drafts almost always over-explain at the start and over-summarize at the end — both can usually be cut by half.
- Read it out loud. Anywhere you stumble is a sentence that needs to be shorter or more direct.
Where to spend your editing time
Not every part of a draft deserves equal attention. The opening line and the first paragraph decide whether anyone keeps reading, so that’s where a rewrite matters most. Body sections mostly need tightening and a specific detail added; closing paragraphs mostly need cutting.
A quick before-and-after check
- Before: “There are many ways AI can help with productivity, and it really depends on your needs.”
- After: “AI won’t fix a messy calendar, but it will draft the follow-up emails you keep putting off.”
The second version takes a position. That’s the difference an editing pass makes, and it’s the part no prompt can do for you.
Make it a habit, not a one-off
Treat every AI draft as step one of two, not the finished product. Once the four-pass edit becomes automatic, it takes just a few extra minutes — and it’s the difference between content that sounds like everyone else’s and content that sounds like yours.
